There are 4 basic steps involved when it comes to having a New Website build:
1. Do you really need a Website ?
2. What type of Website do you want ?
3. What is your Budget for the Website?
4. Balance 2 and 3 to find a realistic starting point !

To get into more detail, let me explain:
Question 1:
Do you need a Website?
If you have a business and you want to keep doing what you do, as well as keeping up with progress, you would need a Website, at least a simple Web-Presence that covers 3 to 5 Pages including your Home Page.
This is something like your Online Business Card, but much more elaborate than a Business Card.
Such a Website can be done from $ 500.00 Au Dollars.
A good Website with more pages and functions will cost you from $ 1,500.00 depending on complexity.
If you are looking at starting a brand New Business, the Website can be a integral Part of your Business, you can even go fully Online, meaning you will establish a full Online Shop on the Internet without having a brick and mortar Business location... In any case, a full Online Shop would cost you only a fraction of what you would have to invest in a brand new Brick and Mortar Business operation.

What type of Website?

Do you want to have a simple Web-Presence, like a Online Business Card, with say 5 pages to drive more traffic to your existing Business?
Do you want a more comprehensive Website with more pages, more Information for your clients, integrated e-mail Addresses, etc to interact with your client base?
Or do you want a complete Internet Business / Online Shop with shopping cart functions, payment processor etc ? The purpose being to do Sales of your Products or Services right there, on the Net without the need of a physical store.
Question 3:
What sort of Budget would you allocate for your new Website?

Can you, yourself edit and manage the Website in the long run without relying on the company and without extra charges every time you want to change or add something?

What is the Cost of the Domain registration annually?
Are there any other ongoing maintenance Costs?
If you compare the Cost of your own Website with the Cost of say the traditional Advertising you are spending each year, you will see that a Website can do some good Advertising for your Business for a lot less Cost of say the normal Newspaper Ads which do cost you anything from $ 80.00 Au Dollars weekly, but most likely you would be spending more than that ...maybe it is $ 400.00 Au Dollars per week ?

About Domain Names:
Domain names are essential these Days!
You really do need to register your own Domain Name......
It is used as a gateway to your Website and makes it easy for people to find your Website and it also provides a professional image.
I only register Domain names through reputable companies!
Usually I go for . com domains and .com.au domains
In case you already have a Domain Name, that can be transferred as long as you are able to provide me with the Authorization Code from your previous Domain Registrar!
That way you can keep operating under your already known Domain Name.
Registering a Domain Name can be a little challenging ...simply because the good Names are usually taken and you have to be really creative and try different combinations to find a niche with a Name you like, that is actually available.
Don't be afraid of using Hyphens...!
They can actually be good + helpful in a Domain Name...
So if you want a Domain Name, for example: www.travel.com/
which most certainly is already taken, you could be successful with:
My personal Tip:
The best Domain Names still end with .com / .com.au
This is the most commonly known ending People know, and most would almost automatically assume yours is a .com and not net or tv etc.
Those domain names are called "top level domain names"
You can also register:
Australian commercial domain names (.com.au ) they cost a little more than the shorter .com's and you need to have a registered ABN number to be able to register.
Most businesses have an ABN number so that's no problem for them.
Actually it makes your business appear more professional if you have a .com.au domain name.

About Links on your Website:
It has been widely used in the past, however I do think it is not really such a great Idea...People come to your Website to look for you, or your products / services, they don't want to waste time with other Sites that don't really relate to their search...and you don't want to distract them from focussing on you!
Exception: Links with relevant good Information like Trade Association links and other links that give your Clients useful content, that way increasing your credibility!
I need to know who the designated Person in your Business is, who will be responsible for the New Website Project. It needs to be one Person with whom I can build a good working relationship, I also will need to train that Person, so in the future they can do all the editing and maintenance of the Website.
Preferably that Person will also be doing the photography or at least have control over it.
Last but not least, I need all your Contact Details to put on your Website, which is: Your full postal address, phone, mobile, fax, e-mail addresses, Skype if you have etc...and let's not forget your Company or ABN Business Number !

Now, let's move forward and say your Website is up and running...what's next ?
Well, you now need to promote your Website!
If People don't know you have a Website, no one will go there.
To get People to visit your Shop, or order your products & services, the first step is to have them research your Website, that will then create response and a percentage of your visitors will turn into purchasing customers!
Put your Web address on all your stationary, especially your business cards, flyer, your quotes, invoices, certificates, all your advertising in newspapers or yellow pages etc
Send Emails to your database, friends, family, anyone you know, and announce your New Website!
You'd be surprised to know, what People use your Website for....Your existing Client Base will look for any New Activities, special Sales, New products, Exhibitions, Announcements of New Staff members etc
Your potential new clients will look at your Website and compare your Business with other offers, they will check on your location, your history, or simply look for your business hours to work out when they can come and visit your premises.
Potential Job Seekers will look at your Website and judge you by your Web Presence...You can actually be pro-active and use your Website to attract suitable skilled new Staff! If you advertise Employment Vacancies somewhere, you need to list your web-address / domain name.
You can also use your Website to grow your e-mail database, which is a great Asset for any Business! Those are the People who are already interested in your Business/ Products / Services, they are, at least partly People who have purchased from you before which makes them your warm market.
